(Pittsburgh) |
- President, Jewish National Fund
- 19-- - Quote: "When,
forty years ago, at the Congress at Baale, I made the draft for
the organization of Jewish Palestine, I had in my mind the
complete picture of such an economically as well as politically
perfect democracy. I had already gone through the school of the
great American genius, Henry George, who, in his famous book "Progress
and Poverty" draws a picture of perfect democracy,
materialized by breaking the monopoly of the land. There is not
the slightest flaw in it, except for what he calls "the
Remedy," his "Single Tax," which certainly is not
the panacea he believed it to be. And I had already uncovered an
almost-flawless historical example of a perfect democracy in the
magnificent economic history of medieval Germany during the four
centuries when her population had free access to the immense
stretches of the Slavic East. I published this in 1898, in my
book: "Large Landed Property and the Social Question."
